Know how the person chooses

Not everybody communicates choice by speaking.

Someone might indicate preference through:

  • Speech
  • Signs
  • Symbols or pictures
  • Objects
  • Gestures
  • Facial expressions
  • Body language
  • Approaching something
  • Moving away
  • Behaviour

Staff should understand how the individual communicates:

  • Yes.
  • No.
  • More.
  • Stop.
  • Not now.
  • Something different.

People who know the person well can often help us understand subtle expressions of preference.
